Welcome to the 445th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the headlines from the past week:

  • There were some cool new wallpapers for download this week. For starters, the new Pixel phones had access to new wallpapers inspired by Aboriginal Day. The James Webb Telescope takes amazing pictures, we have more for your background here. Finally, our latest Wallpaper Wednesday is out with some even neater wallpapers for you to try.
  • Wear OS gets a better Google Maps experience. The smartwatch OS gets the ability to use Google Maps without an accompanying phone. The feature was announced at Samsung’s Unpacked event earlier this week. We don’t know all the details yet, but it’s definitely something different.
  • Google Photos has a new camouflage tool, and it’s hitting the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro devices right now. It is a subtle editing function. The feature blends brighter colors better in photos so they aren’t so distracting. Click the link to see an example of how it works.
  • Google again criticized Apple and its green bubble culture this week. The company launched a website expressly calling on Apple to pull itself together. He touts the benefits of RCS while blaming Apple for giving Android users the dreaded green bubble. Click on the links to find out more.
  • Disney Plus is launching an ad-based plan on December 8. In addition, prices will increase on all other plans. The ad-supported plan costs $7.99 per month. Meanwhile, regular plans go for $10.99 per month or $109.99 per year. Additionally, Disney Plus bundle prices with Hulu and ESPN Plus are also increasing. It’s about to get a bit more expensive for Disney fans.

It’s a cow

Price: Free / $2.99

It’s a cow is a cute little runner game. You play a cow and swipe around the screen to spray milk in different directions. You use this mechanic to propel yourself forward, defeat enemies and the platform to avoid failing. Each level contains coins, apples, and baddies to defeat to earn your three stars. There are also other cows to unlock and over 100 levels. It’s not a super deep game at all, but it’s good arcade fun that’s suitable for kids and adults.

Threema Libre

Price: Free

Threema is a secure messenger comparable to apps such as Telegram and Signal. Threema Libre is the same app, but it doesn’t rely on Google Push services to work. In other words, you can run Threema Libre on any Android device, even if it doesn’t have the Play Store. The application allows you to send SMS and voice messages. You can also make voice and video calls. It is complete and works quite well.

The only downside is that the installation is a bit more complicated than others. You need to install a repository before getting the app on F-Droid. We have linked the installation instructions to the button below.

TerraGenesis: Landing

Price: free to play

TerraGenesis: Landfall is the latest game in the TerraGenesis series. It is a city building simulator where you manage your own city but in space. The goal is to make life possible on Mars. It has many city-building elements, including resource management, challenges to sustain life, and more. You can even conquer new territories. The mechanics are solid, and everything is pretty reasonable. The game has only been out for a few days, so there are still a few bugs the developers are still dealing with, and it’s just a bit more aggressive with microtransactions than we’d like. That said, it should still end up being a decent game.

plant parent

Price: Free / $5.99 per month / $29.99 per year

Screenshot Plant Parent 2022

Plant Parent is a new gardening app, and it has potential. It aims to help people take better care of plants by helping to see potential identifiers of disease or neglect. Basically, you take a picture of your plant, and the app tells you what it is and if there’s anything wrong. There’s also a smart maintenance schedule and reminders to help you stay on top of your plant care.

The app is promising, but it needs to strengthen its subscription strategy. Some people have reported being charged before the free trial ended, and we think $2.99 per week is a bit much. The developers would definitely need to address these issues before we fully recommend it, but as a new gardening app it shows promise otherwise.

Tower of Fantasy

Price: free to play

Tower of Fantasy is a new MMORPG. It has a lot of the usual MMORPG elements, including a story to play through, an open world to explore, and various classes for you to play however you are comfortable with. It has an anime aesthetic with a mix of futuristic and fantasy elements. You can also swipe like in Genshin Impact to navigate the world a little easier. Combat is hack-and-slash with abilities, so it’s nothing we haven’t seen in MMORPGs before.

There are a few minor bugs here and there, but nothing major. It should prove to be quite a popular game in the genre as it has all the elements to succeed.
