The annual iF Design Award in Germany has long been a symbol of aesthetic quality, user-oriented, ergonomic and efficient design in all disciplines, by prestigious companies around the world. The aim of the event is to celebrate ‘good industrial form’, drawing attention to particularly well-designed industrial products and communicating the importance of design and all that it can accomplish: for users , brands and communities.
Organized since 1954, the iF Design Award is chaired by juries such as Dieter Rams, Richard Sapper, Franco Clivio, Stefan Diez and Paloma Picasso. It honors achievements in a myriad of design disciplines – product design, communication, packaging, service design, architecture, interior design, UI (user interface) and UX (user experience), right through to professional concept.
The 2021 panel received nearly 10,000 submissions from 60 countries and was encouraged to assess each category using iF’s guiding principles: identify, support and promote good design; raise awareness of design and the role it plays in our lives; help companies integrate design into their long-term strategies; safeguard the role of professional designer and publicize this job profile; to effect social change through design and support talented young people and create a public platform for young designers.
“Clarity and the role of design and communication are increasingly important to how brands and businesses connect with their audiences,” says iF juror Andy Payne, global creative director at Interbrand . “We’re not looking for just any packaging or message – we’re looking for the exact presentation at the right time, within the context of our values, beliefs, and the short and long term relationships we build with brands. But saying and showing this is not enough. Good design and good communication today are based on action, actual behavior and physical manifestation. It is no longer just the idealized images with their contents, their goals, their manifestos, their reasons to believe and their proposals that we remember, but the reality of our experience.
