Who: Frederick Tang Architecture
This New York architecture boutique was established by Frederick Tang in 2016 (joined in 2018 by Barbara Reyes, the current director of interior design and branding), and over the five years that have following its foundation, it has continued to grow stronger. The Brooklyn-based practice already has a range of projects under its belt, such as homes (with warm and colorful interiors, including one for actors Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale), retail stores, restaurants, galleries and galleries. art and fitness centers. Other work, including a studio in Williamsburg for artist Adam Pendleton, a restaurant on Court Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and a guesthouse in Germantown, New York, is currently underway.
The studio takes care of all aspects of an architectural project, moving easily from small to large scale, and from abstract conceptual thinking to meticulous construction details. Its processes integrate early programming through architectural and interior design, obtaining permits, tenders and construction phase services. Its approach is just as diverse.
“Rather than approaching each project with a particular style, we prefer to emphasize experimentation, curiosity and collaboration,” explains Tang. “The studio mainly designs physical models, full scale models, material samples, hand sketches, as well as digital renderings. We are convinced that an iterative process will produce more refined and unexpected solutions, because space can tell a story. ‘
What: Boerum Hill Townhouse
A typical Brooklyn Brownstone building originally built in 1899 has been transformed by Tang and his team into a colorful and pink house, full of character and light. The 2,700 square foot townhouse is located in Boerum Hill and was commissioned by a young family of four as its main base. The architect’s goal was to balance the period elements of the historic structure – restoring them with love – while incorporating the personality of the new owners, their contemporary sensibility and their preference for the color combination of pink and green. .
“This project was very different from our typical townhouse renovations. The location was special: a small tree-lined block in Brooklyn with colorful homes, each adding to the character of this tight-knit community. “The Pink House” would become the newest addition to the neighborhood, ”says Tang.
Uniting “elegance and whimsy” in a unique design was no easy task, but the house also had to be modern and functional. Interiors have been opened up and circulation has been improved. For example, two existing extensions at the rear allow a particularly dark rear garden. Tang removed them and built a whole new addition, prioritizing the flow of light inside and out. The architectural garden has also been redesigned by Brook Landscape.
Carefully selected artwork and furniture enrich interiors, with examples including a large-scale black and white seascape by an Los Angeles-based photographer, a vintage coffee table by Bertha Schaefer, and a fiberglass chair. 1960s white glass by Eero Aarnio.
